Top 10 Cruising Headaches — How the Caribe Cruiser Program Helps Solve These Issues Before they Sink Your Dream

Top 10 Cruising Headaches—And How to Solve Them Before They Sink Your Dream

Join us as we explore some of the more common complaints from cruisers around the world. Whether you are a seasoned sailor or are just starting out, this article will give you some insight into what life is like out on the water.

1. Constant Maintenance & Breakdowns

Whether you are considering life on the water or already live it, Maintenance and Breakdowns are inevitable and can lead to some serious frustrations on the water. Clients from our Cruiser Program joke that “Things are always breaking.” Many cruisers worldwide joke that “you spend about 80% of your time repairing your boat” — illustrating that maintenance is relentless and never ending.

In the Caribe Cruiser program, we offer a variety of services designed to help alleviate this aspect of life on the water. Through onboard training on your vessel, we help YOU gain the confidence required to fully understand your onboard systems and provide ways to make sure your sail plan goes uninterrupted. We offer over the phone diagnostics and access to our Parts and Service Center to keep you moving to your next destination.

2. Unreliable Internet & Connectivity

For some, the cruising lifestyle offers the solitude frequently sought to avoid the hustle and bustle of everyday land-life. The idea of quietly sitting in an anchorage without worrying about your phone ringing or being bothered with emails certainly sounds appealing. What if you don’t want that solitude all the time? What if you want to stay a little better connected to family and friends? For those that do NOT want this much solitude, there have been some recent advancements for cruisers around the world that help them stay better connected while on the go. Clients and Cruiser Forums frequently cite “unreliable Internet” as a key frustration, especially for those working remotely afloat.

With the Caribe Cruiser Program, we help you determine the best option for internet access tailored to your cruising plans. Whether that is Cell signal based, Satellite based or Radio based, once that option is established, our service team can help you install it to ensure it is working as planned to keep you connected on the water.

3. High Costs & Budget Realities

When it comes to Costs and Budgets, the cruising lifestyle can add up quickly. Without proper guidance and accurate planning, people can feel like they are at the mercy of the contractor wherever they end up. How badly you need something can create opportunity for people to be taken advantage of. The reality of your floating asset is it costs money to maintain. Cruising is rarely cheap without a reference to what things should cost and how much time should be allowed for projects. From slip fees to fuel, to provisioning, repairs—boats cost more than expected for newbies and seasoned sailors alike.

We act as consultants for you to bounce your ideas/plans off of to give you feedback on what we have seen work and where we have seen it fail. Let our team help guide you through some ways to save money on the water. The same way living in a house has added costs not outlined in the purchase contact, a boat can have the same pitfalls if you don’t do your homework.

4. Crowds, Boat Wakes & Poor Neighbors

One of the more common complaints from cruisers is that your neighbors can be a touch “eclectic.” Whether that is at the dock or at anchor, the cruiser lifestyle appeals to a diverse set of people from quite a few different backgrounds and budgets. This variable is a double edged sword and sailors should seek guidance on how to deal with certain situations that arise on the water. With an open mind, this variable can add to the characters you meet along the way. While you can’t control people, you can lessen their effect on your everyday life.

At Caribe Cruisers, we try to alleviate this by training people on acceptable behavior and what is not in the various places your boat will be. Through our onboard training in one of the best cursing grounds in the world, you will learn first hand how to act in accordance with good seamanship when an issue with a fellow boater is present. While going through your training, we get to know you and your fellow sailors and we try to place like minded people together throughout the learning journey so you have some colleagues to share in the experience and use as a reference along the way.

5. Cramped Space, Laundry & Mold

Living on a boat has its advantages and disadvantages. You can go to places some people only dream of going but you may not be able to bring your hot tub. There are always trade offs in the boating world and people joke that there is no “perfect” boat. While small living quarters can bring clutter, humidity, mold, or a general lack of creature comforts, newer models and releases have been aiming to mitigate these problems for people leaving you to focus on enjoying your current location.

If you are new to the cruising world, these can seem daunting but with our help, we can help you navigate these troubles. Mold can be mitigated with proper storage and dehumidification techniques. Laundry can be handled in a variety of ways and we are happy to show you how we do it while you acclimate to the lifestyle and find out what you truly need to live your life on the water,

6. Boat Smells and Marine Head (Toilet) Troubles

The boating world is full of things that can make unpleasant smells. A damp towel sitting too long, small fish jumping onto your swim platform and getting stuck, Air Conditioning condensation dripping into the bilge, leftover food in a fridge that was turned off, boat yard chemicals etc. There are many things that can contribute to funky smells onboard your floating home. The one that seems to intimidate most newcomers and even some seasoned sailors, is the Marine toilet and holding tank systems. Repairs are frequently cited as “gross and frustrating—especially when tanks clog or require pump-outs.”

While they can be intimidating, there are good practices you can do onboard to help alleviate any ‘scent’ concerns and we would be happy to show you what has worked for us over the years.

7. Solo / Docking Anxiety

When it comes to docking, even the most seasoned professionals still have a little anxiety when bringing their boat onto the dock. Slips can be challenging and weather variables add to the chaotic mix on approach. Most cruisers have a fellow sailor onboard to help in tight situations but what if you don’t? What if your crew have to fly out? What if you have an injured crew member and you have to get the boat on the dock yourself, it can be a big challenge when first starting out. In our program, we try to bring your confidence level up to a place where you feel comfortable with how the boat handles and performs. Once you have confidence in your ability, docking solo can be quite rewarding. After all, docking is an art form.

In our docking training scenarios, we put you to the test by placing you in situations most sailors will encounter along their journey. Not to simply challenge you but to develop your way of thinking when it comes to assessing approaches and sizing up what will be needed to have a successful docking experience.

8. Unpredictable Island Time & Slow Services

A complaint we hear frequently from our sailing community lays with the inconsistencies of part arrivals and service time. When the boat breaks, depending on severity, it can stall your travel plans. Waiting weeks for parts or service, delays, customs bureaucracy, and inconsistent support on‑island test peoples patience—especially for newcomers.

At Caribe Cruisers, we aim to mitigate these troubles by having a preferred vendor list for contractors and we stock around $800,000 worth of new parts for a WIDE variety of boats. All the way from that pesky window shade-hook to new generators and rigging. Our vendor list spans the entire Caribbean and consists of people who have helped us on our boats in the past. You can rest easy knowing you will be taken care of wherever you find yourself.

9. Loneliness & Clique Culture

Yes, the isolation aspect of cruising can be a draw for many people at first. You want to escape the life you lived, separate from the world and all of its noise but after a few months of being on the water, you may be looking to make new friends. How exactly do you do that? Making friends can be harder than advertised. Cruising circles can feel cliquish, and it’s easy to feel isolated when you are wrenching through an endless departures and arrival list.

In order to help people feel connected and provide a space for people to interact on their journey, we have started the Caribe Cruiser Facebook page. This helps to keep people informed, offers assistance with trip planning, helping with common problems, and offering a place to share insights along the way.

10. Emotional & Psychological Stress

When most people think of the sailing lifestyle, they think of dolphins playing in the wake, cocktails at sunset, endless sunsets, friends laughing on the bow and seeing things most people only dream of. That is what draws us all to life on the water! While that aspect of the lifestyle certainly exists, it is often accompanied by sharp emotional lows—fear over the anchor dragging, couple squabbles, engine failures, weather warnings etc. This leads many people to say the downsides sometimes outweigh the highs.

We here at Caribe Cruisers hate to hear this kind of thing. When this comes up, we find that people had a misguided expectation of some kind going in. Boats are certainly not “set it and forget it” types of assets. They require time and effort to be able to do the things others can’t.

When you are on top of your maintenance, problems that arise from routine maintenance are minimized. When you are traveling with a group or in a flotilla, route problems can be alleviated. When you have a good contractor team, down time can be minimized. While the lows may be lower at times, the highs can definitely feel higher!

We feel it all comes down to your individual expectation and we are here to guide you along the way. After all, this is a lifestyle! Let us help you take the plunge.
