Financing & acquisition
Financing and acquisition
How marine lending actually works, and where the surprises are.
We are not a lender
Worth saying at the top. Caribe Yacht Group does not lend money, does not receive a cut of your loan, and takes no part in a lender’s decision. What we do is introduce you to marine finance providers we have worked with, tell you what they will ask for before they ask, and keep the boat side of the transaction moving so a funding deadline never becomes the reason a deal falls over.
What marine lenders care about
Marine lending is its own discipline. A boat is mobile collateral in a salt environment, so lenders look at things a mortgage underwriter never would.
- The vessel, not just you. Age, model, condition and how easily she could be resold all affect what is available.
- A survey by an accredited surveyor, almost always required, and usually at your cost.
- Documentation and flag. US Coast Guard documentation, state or territory registration, and where the vessel is kept. USVI-based boats are routine for lenders who know the region and a source of friction for those who do not.
- Insurance in place at closing, with named-storm provisions that will be scrutinised in this part of the world.
- Intended use. Putting the boat into charter changes the loan from a consumer product to something closer to commercial lending, with different terms and different paperwork.
The part people underestimate
Budget beyond the purchase price. Commissioning or refit, delivery, insurance, dockage or a mooring, haul-out and bottom work, and the first year of maintenance. Owners who get caught out are almost never caught out by the loan payment. They are caught out by the twelve months that follow it.
The calculator on every listing page gives an indicative monthly figure so you can sanity-check a boat in ten seconds. It is not a quote, an offer or an approval, and the real number depends on the lender, the vessel and your circumstances. Ask us for an introduction and get it priced properly before you rely on it.
