How a Caribbean sale is different
A catamaran lying in the Virgin Islands is not competing with the same boats as one lying in Florida, and she should not be priced as though she were. Buyers down here are weighing the cost and risk of a delivery against paying more for a boat that is already in the water they want to sail. That gap is real money, and it moves with the season.
It cuts the other way too. Salt, sun and the trades are harder on a boat than a Chesapeake summer, and a buyer who knows these islands will look straight at the standing rigging, the sail wardrobe, the canvas and the state of the gelcoat. Being ready for that conversation is most of what separates a smooth sale from a long one.
The order we do things in
- Walk the boat. In person, with you, before any number is discussed. What is fresh, what is tired, what is about to need doing.
- Price her against real comparables. What has actually closed in this region, not a national asking-price average.
- Decide what is worth fixing. Some jobs return more than they cost and some do not. We will tell you which is which, including when the answer is to leave it and price accordingly.
- Photograph and write her properly. Most listings fail on the photography before anyone reads a word.
- List where buyers are looking — the major brokerage networks and our own book — and answer every enquiry ourselves.
- Manage survey and sea trial. This is where sales are lost. Someone who knows the boat should be standing there.
- Closing, documentation and handover. Including the parts specific to a US Virgin Islands registered vessel.
What we will not do
We will not take a listing at a price we do not believe in to win the instruction and then spend three months talking you down. If your number and ours are far apart, we will say so at the walkthrough, and you can decide what to do with that.
